In a traditional library, books are stored in long cabinets, with only the spines visible. This display unit for De Krook library in Ghent brings movement to that environment. It is not a storage system, but a display piece that adds colour and organises books by emotion rather than alphabetically. Six different modules made of soft foam are placed on a wooden grid. The coloured surfaces together form a pattern, with each module translating a specific emotion into form and colour: anger, joy, surprise, love, sadness and fear. Because the books are arranged in all sorts of ways across the modules, they together form a landscape of books. This introduces an element of play that arouses people’s curiosity and invites them to explore.
