The library in Zottegem is a meeting place for young and old. It is precisely this mix of generations that presented a number of challenges within the current layout. Older people sought peace and quiet and space for conversation, whilst children needed freedom, space to move about and a lively environment. These two worlds often clashed.
With this project, I explored how both target groups can coexist without disturbing one another. My design is based on the principle of ‘vertical tranquillity’. The ground floor features an open and lively space where interaction, socialising and noise are welcome. As visitors move higher up in the building, the atmosphere gradually shifts towards greater silence, concentration and tranquillity.
This transition is reinforced by deliberate choices of materials, colours and forms. Downstairs, colourful accents, soft materials and a combination of rounded shapes, rectangles and semi-circles create a cosy and dynamic atmosphere. On the upper floors, the colour palette becomes calmer and more restrained. Clean lines and straight shapes create a serene environment here for reading, working and relaxation.
