With “I wanna be a showgirl, baby!” Maure Claeys explores the vulnerable, at times awkward and embarrassing realities of what it means “to want”. Her work consists of collages and impressions of those collages which she paints on “impractical” fabrics, such as lace, tulle and velvet. She then sews these fabrics fragments together to create a wearable collection inspired by historical burlesque fashion. Key principles in her work are repetition and circularity: her practice is ever evolving as she often takes apart older artworks to create new ones.
