I start with doodles, either in my sketchbook or directly on the canvas. In these, I seek out the tension between the horizontal and the vertical. These act as coordinates that the paint responds to: matter that expands, spreads, slips, and chooses a direction.
Toxic environment.
Neon-chemical, edges.
Everything arises from a systematic reaching for the same eight basic colours; mixing takes place on the canvas. Colour is applied from a centre. No noodling (Alex Katz). The imagination works afterwards; then tangible things come to the fore.
I paint representations of spaces in which a desire to generate depth is expressed. A positive and negative within which things unfold. There is a simultaneous presence of small and large, micro and macro. A microscopic presence, but no refinement.
