How can choreography function as a rule-based system that generates spatial patterns through the interlacing of bodies, movement, and time?
The research begins with the traditional Maypole dance. This project investigates how dance can function as a rule-based system that generates patterns in space. By translating the Maypole dance into a notation system linked to the binary language of computer science, the choreography becomes a set of instructions similar to an algorithm. The movements of the dancers produce woven structures that shows the mathematical logic hidden within a traditional ritual. Through these interactions, the project highlights the relationship between movement, translation, mathematical principles, and collective structure.
