Fons & Fien is a book created within Giedre Narusyte Boots’ educational transmedia project Displaced Childhood. This project brings together stories of adults looking back on a devastated childhood. The common thread is how today’s child explores these memories, forming a bridge between past and present — as they experience the same hurts. This is how history repeats itself. The project targets children aged 10 and above — the future decision-makers — in the hope of breaking this vicious cycle of repetition.
The story follows Fien, a 10-year-old girl struggling with the pain of bullying. Only with Fons, her old rabbit stuffed toy that has been in the family for generations, does she feel safe and understood. When she falls asleep, Fons comes alive and takes her on a journey through her emotions. Along the way, they face obstacles that they overcome together. Fons, who was bullied himself as a young cuddly toy, shares his memories and helps Fien grow in strength and self-confidence.
The book is aimed at children who are victims of bullying and can be used by teachers, educators and parents as educational material. It makes the topic of bullying discussable and could encourage children to recognise, name and express their feelings and emotions. Via QR codes, adults are supported with targeted questions they can ask children. Thus, children of today who recognise themselves in Fons or Fien have the opportunity to break the pattern of repetition — and rewrite their own story.
