In this master’s project, Marthe Amerlynck investigates how artistic forms of ‘social design’ can promote social cohesion in the Ghent neighbourhood of Nieuw-Gent, a neighbourhood with many social challenges and cultural diversity. Through initiatives such as the ‘Verbindmomentjes’, in which local residents could weave together, she tried to establish connections between generations and cultures. Working from meeting places such as De Serre and CAMPUSatelier, she used a low-threshold artistic approach in which spontaneity and equality were central. The collectively created ‘lappendeken van Nieuw-Gent’ (Patchwork of Nieuw-Gent) acts as a metaphor for connectedness. She also developed the question game ‘Social Shuffle’ to playfully stimulate dialogue and empathy. The installation of ‘Weefboomhutten’ on the central square also involved children in the process. Marthe shows that artistic practices can not only connect, but also contribute to resilience in people in socially vulnerable situations. She advocates sustainable, small-scale initiatives in the immediate living environment that offer opportunities for social participation. The master’s project underlines that ‘social design’ can bring people out of their isolation and allow them to take root again in their communities.
