How can photography be made more accessible to people with visual impairments?

This question formed the starting point of my master’s thesis. Photography is associated with looking, with capturing what is visible. But what does photography mean to someone who sees little or nothing? Can visual language also be accessible to someone who lives outside the visual realm? And how can the medium itself be adapted so that visually impaired people can actively participate in the photographic process (from creating to editing images)?

During my research, I collaborated with different organisations and target groups: from the Utrecht photography collective Seeing The Unseen, consisting of blind and visually impaired photographers, to the Antwerp care centre De Markgrave. These collaborations gave me an insight into the obstacles faced by visually impaired people and their urge to be creative.
