The Blue Guys originated from my personal experience with Tourette syndrome (TS). As a person with TS, I often experience misunderstanding and notice how difficult it can be to participate in cultural activities such as films or theatre performances. My tics are exacerbated by stimuli or stress, leading to tension and discomfort, especially in environments where silence and sitting still are expected.

An inspiration for my master’s thesis is the relaxed performance ‘Permit, oh permit my soul to rebel’ by Aline Breucker and Quintijn Ketels, who created a performance where movement and stillness are possible. Through scenography, I too want to design an environment where everyone, including people with TS or other needs, can feel free and comfortable.

My project consists of a set-up with five different audience spaces, each tailored to different needs: from a classic grandstand to individual seats or reclining areas. This gives everyone the chance to experience art in their own way. During the Graduation of KASK & Conservatorium, I invite other master students to show their work within this inclusive set-up. In this way, I make scenography a tool to promote accessibility and inclusion in the art world.
