My masters project explores the unconscious as a driving force in the tension between overthinking and intuitive decision-making within my design practice. By working with self-imposed rules and systems, the unconscious is activated; control is loosened while at the same time a framework emerges in which decisions can be made. As a result, my design process aligns with the logic of algorithms: structured processes which, despite their rigidity, generate unpredictable outcomes.
In my designs, I regard the unconscious as a layered archive, a network of memories and associations, interconnected and never fully graspable at first glance. To make these ideas tangible, I start with themes that make the unconscious discussable:
dreams, childhood, intuition, association and the Other. Each work is a translation of one of these five themes.
And so, lions begin to dance.
Daniel Kahnemann: “We are like a machine that creates a reality.”
Julia Kristeva: “The Other is my own and proper unconsciousness.”
