what was once undisturbed nature is no longer to be found. what was once a healthy place for humans has suffered as well.” – r. kaplan & s. kaplan

Nature has a proven positive impact on our mental well-being, but it is becoming less and less accessible in an urbanised society. In my thesis, I investigate how we can use spatial design to promote rest, recuperation and community from nature. Starting from the historical trajectory of Zwarte Jean, the former steam tram between Vossem and Tienen, I propose a recreational redevelopment. By reactivating this historic line as a walking and experiential route, I want to build a bridge between past and future, focusing on heritage, landscape and the healing potential of nature.
