Water is the silent memory of Bertem. The village emerged in the shelter of the Voer Valley, where water, the landscape and people have historically come together. Settlement grew in step with the rhythm of the landscape. Today, that rhythm has been disrupted.

But the soul of the village has not disappeared; it has merely receded beneath the surface.

Bertem’s future lies in making visible once again what is already there. By re-anchoring heritage, giving water room, bringing the landscape into the village and reimagining public space as a place of encounter, the village can rediscover its own logic.

Every square, every street and even every garden can be a link in a finely woven network of micro-habitats, connected to the Voer Valley and the surrounding plateaus. In this way, Bertem becomes a place where landscape, water and daily life converge. A contemporary form of village living, rooted in the landscape and focused on the future.
