The design for the Verona hamlet, situated in the Voer Valley, is underpinned by four key pillars, namely:

1) WATER

The issues surrounding erosion and flood risk are addressed by utilising the terrain to allow water to infiltrate locally before being drained away gradually. Swales in the forest compensation area, infiltration basins at the foot of the higher Duisberg Plateau, a cascade of wadis along the central Kappelestraat and a vast buffer basin interwoven with the future development provide resilience against this phenomenon.

2) ECOLOGY

At present, the area consists of many fragmented patches of green space. In the design, these are connected to create valuable ecological corridors. By providing a strong layering and a gradient from closed to open, the area becomes an ecological asset.

3) USE

A gradient from open to closed, from bustle to tranquillity. With places to linger, such as balconies offering views over the valley, and to move about, these ensure dynamic use of the area.

4) HISTORY

In addition to the use of distinctive historical materials, sunken paths—which are strongly aligned with the identity of the place—are also being created to accommodate the differences in elevation. Beyond their functional significance, they are also highly valuable in terms of experience and ecology.

VISIE
