When starting a collective, an artist-run, we wish to take a distance from capitalist, fast-paced, hierarchical institutions. We aim to structure ourselves horizontally.

But what does horizontality mean? Is it a flat line? Many collectives claim they work non-hierarchically yet in practice horizontality appears a difficult practice.

This research-project figures as an attempt to work without hierarchy. A series of performative interviews were conducted with different Brussels-based collectives – Canapé, Faire-Part, One Field Fallow, The Post Collective, School of Love and DomestiCity. Starting from the question, “What are caring elements and practices that makes your collective horizontal?”, whole conversations unfolded about doubts, good practices and a lot of motivation to create non-hierarchical collectives. Our conversations figure as the building blocks for a publication and a conversation game.
