This practical research concerns the development of a new working tool in the form of a card game. The following research question was central to this:
How can we better guide students in their self-study?
The research was conducted in an educational setting in my various oboe classes and in the saxophone class of Leen Janssen.
Based on the research questions, a preliminary study was initiated. Literature on pedagogy was consulted and the ‘Kunstig Competent’ (Artistically Competent) curriculum was also taken into account. In addition, a survey was conducted among students in the DKO (part-time arts education).
The results were analysed, which led to the initial development of a card game. This game was tested in the next phase of the research by students of Leen Janssen and myself. During this action research, feedback was provided to my mentor Karin de Fleyt and other possible uses for the cards were explored. This was incorporated into the action research.
After the practical phase, a meeting with a focus group was planned to discuss the results. The findings from the card game were discussed and ideas were shared for the further development of the game. The director of Knst. Hasselt was also present in the focus group, and I am receiving support from him for the further development of the game within that academy.
The card game and the cards have proven to be a useful tool in teaching practice. Only some further improvement and refinement are needed.
