In Mirage, Sander photographed in and around the film studios of Ouarzazate, Morocco, a place where entire worlds are built for the camera. Historical city sets and architectural elements are erected there, whilst the surrounding desert landscapes form part of these constructed worlds. Films such as Gladiator, Babel and Lawrence of Arabia were shot here. When filming ends, many of these structures are left behind and gradually fall into disrepair. The images focus on these sets and their surroundings, revealing landscapes that betray their artificial nature. These temporary worlds intersect with daily life: whenever a film is being shot, the fictional world briefly intrudes upon everyday existence.
