“Gleich mit jedem Regengusse
Ändert sich dein holdes Tal,
Ach, und in demselben Flusse,
Schwimmst du nicht zum zweitenmal.
Du nun selbst!” Stuk uit Dauer im Wechsel (Goethe, 1806)
[EN] The Voer is a small stream in the Dijle valley between Tervuren en Leuven, with Bertem as a middle village.
Walking along the stream starts with sounds of rippling water, birds and rustling leaves. Closer to the village sounds intensify and the natural rhythm mixes with the constant noise of the E40, crossing the village.
When our movements coincide with the rhythm of water and landscape – Ecological kinship allows us to walk and walking in return germinates ecological connection. Ultimately, connecting to landscape contributes to our collaborative survival (Inspired by ‘Walking as a Research Practice’, Temlow et al, 2022).
This thesis studies how a strong stream can be the carrier of a strong village, through which it runs. Ready for the future, connected and livable.
