Fee Sarens, Hotel of the Subconsious

Als eindopdracht kreeg ik ‘Hotel Kapellen’. We werden geïntroduceerd aan een erg overweldigend gebouw met veel karakter. Dit gebouw moesten we omtoveren tot een hotel van hoge kwaliteit. Dat heb ik met hard werk en goede mentors kunnen bereiken.
Het thema waar ik voor koos is ‘Surrealisme’. Waarom?
Bij het analyseren van het Kapellen Theater gebouw heb ik gemerkt dat bepaalde aspecten van het bestaand gebouw erg interessant en uniek zijn:
– De ronde vorm van het gebouw
– Gouden exterieur afwerking
– Zwart-wit keramische tegels in diamant patroon
– Rond sky-light op het terras
– Groen dak
Dit zijn allemaal kenmerken die ik in mijn ontwerp wou behouden en versterken. In mijn denk proces zocht ik voor esthetische verbindingen met de zwart-wit keramische tegels en ronde vormen. Waar heb ik deze kenmerken al eerder gezien?:
– Circus
– Alice in wonderland
– Nicoletta Ceccoli kunst
Wat deze zaken gemeen hebben is ‘Surrealisme’. Ze zijn zoals een volledig andere wereld waar alles wel herkenbaar is maar op een verwarrende dromerige manier. Dat gevoel probeer ik uit mensen te lokken via mijn ontwerp waar ik speelse verwarring en dromerige kleuren en vormen integreer. ‘Hotel of the Subconsious’

As a final assignment I received “Hotel Kapellen”. We were introduced to a very overwhelming building with a lot of character. We had to transform this building into a high-quality hotel. I was able to achieve that with hard work and good mentors.
The theme I chose is “Surrealism”. Why?
When analyzing the Kapellen Theater building, I noticed that certain aspects of the existing building are very interesting and unique:
– The round shape of the building
– Gold exterior finish
– Black and white ceramic tiles in diamond pattern
– Round sky-light cutout on the terrace
– Green roof
These are all characteristics that I wanted to keep and enhance in my design. In my thinking process I looked for aesthetic connections with the black and white ceramic tiles and round shapes. Where have I seen these features before?:
– Circus
– Alice in Wonderland
– Nicoletta Ceccoli art
The one thing these have in common is “Surrealism”. They are like a completely different world where everything is recognizable but in a confusing dreamy way. I try to lure that feeling out of people through my design where I integrate playful confusion and dreamy colors and shapes. ‘Hotel of the Subconsious’
