This research project examines possible approaches to independence and self-confidence in sight-reading and finger placement among piano students in the second and third years of the DKO. Through an exploratory literature review, consultations with practitioners and inspiration drawn from traditional Irish music, I developed a series of exercises or ‘puzzles’ that can be used as part of a weekly lesson or as daily homework. The puzzles are designed to develop interval-based reading skills and an understanding of basic fingering patterns in young piano pupils. The exercises build on the recognition of differences in note placement or interval on a simplified stave. They consist of short and playful melodies in 6/8 time, which can be played with both the left and right hands and can also be transposed to any desired key. The practical component of this research was carried out and tested over a six-week period with a diverse group of pupils to assess their progress, as well as their motivation and enjoyment when using the exercises, and to determine the pedagogical framework required for the exercises.
