Stef T'Jampens, Harmonie tussen leren en spelen
The school’s redesign emphasizes sensory and natural play, with particular attention to wadis and safety. The new schoolyard offers a rich, sensory play experience through fragrant flower beds, herb and vegetable gardens, and different textures such as sand, gravel and wood bark. These elements stimulate children’s senses and invite them to smell, feel and taste.
A central part of the design are wadis, shallow ditches that collect rainwater and allow it to slowly infiltrate into the soil. These wadis create a natural play environment where children can learn about water management, ecology and biodiversity. They are surrounded by native plants and provide play opportunities such as stepping stones and natural water streams, promoting adventurous play.
Safety is also paramount in this design. Play areas are clearly defined and provided with shaded areas to prevent overheating. Soft, natural materials are used to cushion falls, and uncluttered pathways are provided for safe student flow.
This redesign transforms the schoolyard into a safe, inspiring environment where children can play, explore and learn freely in harmony with nature.
