Simme Vandersteen, Darmsnaren, strijkstokken en "Deux Violes Esgales"

330 jaar… Zo lang is het geleden dat Nicolas Bertrand zijn vroegst overgeleverde bas viola da gamba maakte. 1687 was ook het jaar waarin Marin Marais zijn eerste ‘Pièces de violes’ publiceerde, Rousseau uitpakte met zijn ‘Traité de la Viole’ en Jean Baptiste Lully de geest gaf. Kortom, een bewogen jaar voor de Franse muziekwereld. Geïnspireerd door de muziek van de bijna mythische Monsieur de Sainte Colombe’s concerts à deux violes besloot ik om twee bas-gamba’s te maken, zelf de darmsnaren en bijbehorende strijkstokken uit Europese houtsoorten te maken om zo op het einde van mijn master een totaalproject af te kunnen leveren waarbij alles aan het instrument zelfgemaakt is.

Three hundred and thirty years … that is the time that has passed since Nicolas Bertrand made the oldest of his surviving bass viols. 1687 was also the year when Marin Marais published his first ‘Pièces de violes’, Rousseau came up with his Traité de la Viole, and Jean Baptiste Lully gave up the ghost. Indeed, it was an eventful year for the French world of music.

Inspired by the near-mythic Monsieur de Sainte Colombe’s concerts à deux violes, I decided to make two bass viols, including the gut strings and bows from European wood, in order to present, at the end of this master track, a complete project where the entire instrument and all of its parts are self-made.
