Sam Heyvaert, Road to Nowhere

Sam Heyvaert is een kunstenaar en comedian die zowel performances als beeldend werk creëert. Dit masterjaar lag de focus op installaties waarin performance-elementen zijn verwerkt. De installaties zijn meestal gemaakt van basismaterialen  zoals ducktape en gips. Zijn kleurenpalet is gebaseerd op het befaamde duo Bert en Ernie. Sam haalt zijn inspiratie uit goochelshows en slapstickcomedy. Zijn werk bevat altijd wel een knipoog. Het zijn slechte grappen tot het uiterste gedreven.

Zijn masterproject, “Road to Nowhere,” is een reeks van 3D-werken waarin afstand een belangrijke rol speelt, vandaar de “road”. Het eindigt ook in een soort anticlimax. De titel verwijst natuurlijk ook naar het nummer van Talking Heads, dat vaak opstond tijdens de uren in het atelier. Inhoudelijk heeft hij zich vooral toegelegd op existentialisme. Wat is het nut van het leven? Er is geen nut. Het gaat nergens naar toe, dus we kunnen net zo goed lachen onderweg naar nergens.

Sam Heyvaert is an artist and comedian who creates both performance and visual work. In his master year, the focus was on installations incorporating performance elements. The installations are mostly made of basic materials such as duck tape and plaster. His colour palette is based on the famous duo Bert and Ernie. Sam draws his inspiration from magic shows and slapstick comedy. His work always contains a wink to the audience. They are bad jokes taken to extremes.

His master project, ‘Road to Nowhere,’ is a series of 3D works in which distance plays an important role, hence the ‘road’. It also ends in an anticlimax of sorts. The title is a refers to the Talking Heads song, which was often on during the hours in the studio. In terms of content, he focused on existentialism. What is the meaning of life? There is no point to life, so we might as well laugh when we walk the road of life.
