In The Principle of Cladding schrijft Adolf Loos: “The architect’s general task is to provide a warm and livable space. Carpets are warm and livable. He decides for this reason to spread out one carpet on the floor and to hang up four to form the four walls”. Loos verwijst hiermee naar het bekledingsprincipe van zijn leermeester Gottfried Semper. De geweven mat en het gebruik ervan als vloer, wand of opgehangen aan een structuur, werd door Semper gezien als de oorsprong van de architectuur. De villa Müller reeks is het resultaat van een interpretatie van deze weefsels en van het gelijknamige bouwwerk van Loos.

The woven mat and its use as a floor, wall or suspension from a structure was seen by Semper as the origin of its architecture. The Müller villa series is the result of an interpretation of these fabrics and of the construction of the same name by Loos.
