Boeken zijn bijna in elk deeltje van een huis te vinden. Ze zijn geduwd naar de hoek van een bureau, liggen gestapeld op een nachtkastje of zijn te vinden in kasten op kinderkamers. Even nonchalant als onvermijdelijk komen verhalen samen op de schappen. De vraag rijst enkel hoe we moeten omgaan met zoveel vrijheid die tegelijkertijd ook zijn beperkingen kent. Er worden zoveel boeken gelezen en samengebracht in boekenkasten die eeuwige universums vormen. In de Trojaanse Oorlog staat een Engels landhuis van de late 17de eeuw. Achilles gaat kaarten met Jo March. Sherlock Holmes lost de moorden op die zich net voor de kust van Devon afspelen. Romantiek, historie, misdaad, psychologie… elk geven ze de sleutel en het privilege aan de lezer om zich voor even, compleet te laten verliezen. Al is het twijfelachtig of iemand er eigenlijk iets van afweet.
Project rond vier boeken: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland van Lewis Carroll (1865), Tales of Mystery & Imagination van Edgar Allan Poe (1935), Between the Acts van Virginia Woolf (1940) en Ballad Of The Sad Cafe van Carson McCullers (1951).
Books can be found in almost every part of a home. They are pushed to the corner of a desk, stacked on a bedside table or found in cupboards in children’s rooms. As casually as inevitably, stories congregate on shelves. The question only arises as to how to deal with so much freedom that at the same time has its limitations. So many books are read and brought together in bookcases that form eternal universes. In Trojan War is an English country house of the late 17th century. Achilles plays cards with Jo March. Sherlock Holmes solves murders taking place just off the coast of Devon. Romance, history, crime, psychology… each gives the key and privilege to the reader to be, for a moment, completely lost. Though it is doubtful that anyone actually knows anything about it.
