Menno Eggink, Herinnering (kamers) / Memory (rooms)

De herinnering fascineert mij. In mijn werk leg ik vast hoe ik mij bepaalde plaatsen herinner; kamers waar ik heb gewoond of gelogeerd. Kamers waar ik in- of uittrok tijdens een periode van verandering en verhuizing.

Ik heb ze vooral ’s nachts ervaren, in het donker, met enkel licht dat van buiten naar binnen viel. Enkel datgene waarop het licht viel, zag je. De rest bleef in het duister gehuld. Dit complementeert de herinnering waarbij niet alles wordt onthouden maar toch de hele ruimte wordt gesuggereerd. De beelden zijn dan ook geen exacte weergaves van de kamers, maar benaderen zo getrouw mogelijk mijn herinneringen. Ik construeer daartoe tekeningen en test druktechnieken tot het voor mij precies klopt. De constructie van de tekening vat het perspectief waarin ik mij de ruimte herinner. De druktechniek is toegespitst op het weergeven van het zwart waarin alles wegvalt, van de vele grijstinten en van de onscherpte van het indirecte licht.

Memory fascinates me. In my work, I record how I remember certain places; rooms where I lived or stayed. Rooms where I moved in or out during a period of change and relocation.

I experienced them mostly at night, in the dark, with only light falling in from outside. Only what the light fell on could be seen. The rest remained shrouded in darkness. This complements the memory where not everything is remembered but still the whole space is suggested. The images are therefore not exact representations of the rooms, but approach my memories as faithfully as possible. To this end, I construct drawings and test printing techniques until it is exactly right for me. The construction of the drawing captures the perspective in which I remember the room. The printing technique focuses on rendering the black in which everything falls away, the many shades of grey and the blurred indirect light.
