In ‘GAUTAMA’ werkte ik samen met mijn 87-jarige grootvader, Koo Gautama, om een verhalende, theatrale, muzikale, poëtische performance te creëren. Het stuk is gebaseerd op zijn verhalen en herinneringen aan zijn moederland Indonesië en de bloedige rellen die daar plaatsvonden in 1965-66.

Hoe meer ik hem naar Indonesië vroeg, hoe doolhofachtiger zijn antwoorden werden, waardoor een verhaal ontstond dat zoveel begin- en eindpunten had dat het ons beiden leek te vangen. Daarom ging ik op zoek naar een andere, poëtische, organische taal om dit verhaal te vertellen, en begon ik te werken met muzikanten en dans.

Het resultaat is een theaterperformance (40 min) en video-installatie, over de tirannie van angst en het verliezen/vinden van een thuis.

Er is een dorp nodig om een kind groot te brengen, — er is een gemeenschap nodig om naar gestilde verhalen te luisteren en ze samen een stem te geven.

In ‘GAUTAMA’ I worked together with my 87-years old grandfather, Koo Gautama, to create a storytelling, theatrical, musical, poetic performance piece. The piece is based on his stories and memories of his motherland Indonesia, and the mass massacre that took place there in 1965-66.

The more I asked him about Indonesia, the more mazelike his answers became, weaving a story that had so many beginnings and ends that it seemed to trap both of us. Consequently, I began a search for another, poetic, organic language to tell this tale, and started working with musicians and dance.

The result is a theatrelike performance (40 min) and video installation, about the tyranny of fear and losing/finding home.

It takes a village to raise a child, — it takes a community to listen to far away, quiet stories and give them a voice together.
