For the graduate project of the course Finishing & Advice, I was given the task of transforming Hotel Des Brasseurs into a high-end hotel. The hotel is located in De Haan, at a 9-minute walk from the sea, and is one of the oldest buildings there. I furnish a reception area, lobby seating area, consumption room, winter garden, toilets and ten rooms there.

The concept for this building starts with the location. People come to the sea to unwind, to be able to relax. I want to carry this idea through into my adult-only hotel.
I see the sea as a contrast between light and dark. The beach radiates softness and light, while the deep waters are dark and murky.

Using soft, light, natural materials, I create a relaxing environment. Thus, I start working with Mortex for the walls and ceiling and light travertine for benches. To reflect the contrast of light and dark, I go to work with dark details in furniture and accessories as well as the striking black wall in the lounge.

Buitenkant Hotel Des Brasseurs

“Sea is the symbol of calmness, peace, spirituality and emotional balance. The moving sea waves know a lot about your inner feelings. The sea mainly symbolizes your calm mind, fluctuating emotions and internal strength.

The sea has a special appeal to the human heart. It has occupied our imaginations since the earliest myths. As a symbol of life, sea represents divine generosity. Indeed, it’s a personification and vulnerability, change and constancy, stillness and rage. Water in all its glory is considered a purifier of the soul. The spiritual meaning of water mainly represents emotions, new beginnings an purification. As our emotions are very changing, so is water. Water indicates hope as it will help fade away negative emotions over time and return into its natural tranquil state of being.”
