Kim Van Tricht, TOXIC

In de silhouetten van Kim Van Tricht lijken twee tijdvakken frontaal met elkaar in botsing te komen. Als kind uit de tacky nillies behoorden crop tops en rafelige hotpants à la Britney Spears tot Van Trichts vroegste ervaring met mode: ‘Als 8-jarige vond ik dat allemaal heel gewoon en begreep niet dat zoiets voor lagereschoolkinderen uit den boze was.’ Een noodzakelijk tegengewicht vond Van Tricht in de huisvrouw van de jaren zestig. Gevangen in haar routineuze microkosmos, staat zij symbool voor onderdrukking. In Van Trichts fantasie ontlaadt deze wantoestand zich in een moment van crisis: de huisvrouw vergiftigt haar echtgenoot. Slangachtige motieven en tribals zijn daar het gevolg van. De zestiger jaren laten zich ook gevoelen op het vlak van stofkeuze: bloempatronen, plastic tafellakens uit de Brico, you name it.

In Kim Van Tricht’s silhouettes, two eras seem to collide head-on. As a child of the ‘tacky nillies’, Britney Spears-style crop tops and frayed hot pants were among Van Trichts earliest fashion experiences: ‘An an 8-year-old I thought these were normal everyday clothes and I couldn’t understand why they were inappropriate to wear to primary school.’ The necessary counterbalance was found in the sixties housewife. Caught in her routine microcosm, she embodies oppression. In Van Tricht’s imagination, this abuse comes to a head in a dramatic moment of crisis: the housewife poisons her husband. Snakelike motifs and tribal designs echo this denouement, and the sixties are recalled in the choice of fabrics: flower patterns, DIY store plastic table-cloths, you name it …
