Jef Vandenbossche, Far Nearer

Als de ‘first place’ onze thuis en de’ second place’ onze werkomgeving is, is de ‘third place’ een plek waar we even onze zorgen over de andere twee plaatsen kunnen vergeten en van het gezelschap van anderen kunnen genieten. Je kan ze zien als een tweede thuis, waar een gemeenschapsgevoel tot stand komt en onze behoefte aan verbondenheid wordt vervuld. Vanwege hun sociale functie is deze derde plek een  dam tegen de golf van groeiende eenzaamheid. Met zijn ‘third place’- theorie beklemtoont socioloog Ray Oldenburg het belang van informele publieke ontmoetingsplaatsen in onze samenleving.

In tijden waar het verlangen naar ontmoeting groot maar afstand houden de norm is, documenteert Jef Van den Bossche allerhande ‘third places’ in zijn thuisstad Antwerpen: cafés, gebedshuizen, (sport)clubs, parken of andere plaatsen die de sociale vitaliteit van een buurt of gemeenschap mee bepalen.

If the ‘first place’ is our home and the ‘second place’ is our work environment, the t’hird place’ is a place where we can forget our worries about the other two and enjoy the company of others. They can be seen as a second home, where a sense of community is created and our need for belonging is fulfilled. Because of their social function, this third place is a dam against the wave of growing loneliness. With his ’third place’ theory, sociologist Ray Oldenburg emphasises the importance of informal public meeting places in our society.

In times when the desire to meet is great, but keeping a distance is the norm, Jef Van den Bossche documents all kinds of ’third places’ in his home city of Antwerp: cafés, places of worship, (sports) clubs, parks or other places that help determine the social vitality of a neighbourhood or community.
