Houda Fayek, Colonia - Een Harmonie van Privacy en Interactie

Voor mijn bachelorproef heb ik het pand Colonia in de stad Antwerpen als cohousingproject onderzocht. Dit project biedt kwalitatieve woningen door het oude gebouw Colonia op te delen in 9 diverse woonunits, elk met een uniek karakter.

Tijdens mijn proces heb ik gezocht naar een balans tussen privacy en sociaal contact. Iedereen heeft recht op een unieke woonunit waar privacy gewaarborgd is, terwijl de gemeenschappelijke ruimtes, in een deel van het gebouw, sociale interactie stimuleren.

Het nieuwe ontwerp behoudt de oude gevel van het bestaande gebouw Colonia, wat de historische waarde van het pand versterkt. Daarnaast worden looppaden aangelegd die zorgen voor een goede circulatie buiten het gebouw en tegelijkertijd sociaal contact bevorderen. Deze looppaden, samen met de gemeenschappelijke ruimtes en wandelpaden doorheen de huizen, versterken het gevoel van gemeenschap.

Dit cohousingproject krijgt hierdoor de beleving van een kleine stad, waar sociaal contact wordt bevorderd en bewoners zich thuis kunnen voelen.

For my undergraduate thesis, I researched the Colonia building in the city of Antwerp as a cohousing project. This project provides quality housing by dividing the old Colonia building into 9 diverse residential units, each with a unique character.

During my process, I sought a balance between privacy and social contact. Everyone is entitled to a unique living unit where privacy is guaranteed, while the common areas, in one part of the building, encourage social interaction.

The new design preserves the old facade of the existing Colonia building, reinforcing the historic value of the property. In addition, walkways are created that provide circulation outside the building while promoting social contact. These walkways, along with common areas and walkways throughout the houses, reinforce the sense of community.

This gives this cohousing project the experience of a small town, where social contact is fostered and residents can feel at home.
