Ezra Veldhuis begeeft zich zoekend op het snijvlak tussen schilder- en installatiekunst. Er zijn twee sporen in haar werk te onderscheiden die uit eenzelfde onderzoek vertrekken maar sterk verschillen van ‘strategie’ en installatievorm. Ze maakt enerzijds werken in serie waarin ze een ‘grootse leegte’ opzoekt door te spelen met de suggestie van wat zich rond en tussen de afzonderlijke werken bevindt. Daar tegenover staat het maken van grote doeken waarmee ze de toeschouwer uitnodigt in de geschilderde ruimte en op hetzelfde moment het schilderij expliciet deel te laten uitmaken van onze werkelijke ruimte. In de grote doeken focust Ezra zich op de (immersieve) ‘wereld’ in het doek, terwijl in de luiken de witruimte tussen en rond de werken ontzettend meespeelt.

Ezra Veldhuis explores the interface between painting and installation. Two tracks can be discerned in her work, which both start from the same research but diverge widely in terms of strategy and form. On the one hand, she creates works in series in which she seeks a ‘grand void’ by playing with the suggestion of what is around and between the separate pieces. The other line of works are large canvases that invite the viewer inside the painted space while making the painting itself explicitly a part of the actual space. In these large pieces, Ezra focuses on the (immersive) ‘world’ in the canvas, while in the series pieces an important role is played by the white spaces between and around the works.
