De garnaal is niet alleen een weekdier. Hij symboliseert ook iedereen die net buiten onze maatschappij valt.
Een dier waarvan nog steeds niet duidelijk is of hij wel degelijk pijn ervaart is een metafoor voor al diegenen die op de rand balanceren. Juist met hun ogen boven het zand uitkomen en pas ‘s nachts zich aan het oppervlak wagen.
De garnaal is nooit ver weg, hij kan je buurman zijn. Als garnalenliefhebber streef ik naar een ethische samenleving waar elk individu gerespecteerd wordt, onafhankelijk van zijn/haar kleur, geslacht, leeftijd, soort, gezondheid elk levend wezen bezit natuurlijke rechten.
Daar wil ik het over hebben in mijn kortfilm, de rechten van ‘de garnaal’.
Ik hoop dat u na het kijken van dit levensverhaal ook tot het besef komt dat garnalen degelijk gevoelens hebben.

The shrimp is not just a mollusc. He also symbolizes everyone who is just outside our society.
An animal of which it is still unclear whether it is actually feeling pain is a metaphor for all those who are balancing on the edge. Reach out of the sand with their eyes and only venture to the surface at night.
The shrimp is never far away, it can be your neighbour. As a shrimp lover I strive for an ethical society where every individual is respected, regardless of his/ her colour, sex, age, species, health and every living being has natural rights.
That’s what I want to talk about in my short film, the rights of ‘the shrimp’.
I hope that after watching this life story you will also realize that shrimps have feelings too.

Ellen graduated drawing at LUCA School of arts before she started a masters animation film at KASK School of arts, Ghent.
She’s a hybrid person and currently active in drawing, animation, painting and murals. In a collab called Samonelle she combines the absurd poetic world of Comedian Sam Heyvaert. He was a big inspiration for this film ‘Dear people, we have feelings too’. The dramatic music is work of Collab Coalition: Patrick Housen and Dries Geusens.
Everything starts in Ellen’s sketchbook, it’s a diary, it became the main inspiration for the animations, paintings and drawings. Drawing is like traveling, a flight away from the real life. A flight to create safe memories. Very important is the experience of the place, the atmosphere. This atmosphere she creates for you, the viewer. Enjoy.
