Danyon Verhaege, On the edge of improvisation

Frank Bridge voltooide zijn enige piano sonate in het jaar 1924. Het werk belichaamt Bridge zijn bedroefdheid en verontwaardiging omtrent de gruwelijkheden die zich afspeelden tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Naast zeer turbulente en virtuoze passages laat Bridge af en toe ruimte voor hoop, het is net in deze momenten waarop de sonate improvisatorisch aanvoelt. De 15^de pianosonate van Frank Nuyts beschrijft dan weer wat de componist waarnam en ervoer toen hij te midden van het centrale plein op de Bijlokesite naar het noorden keek. Ondanks de nauwkeurig genoteerde ritmes wordt het geheel haast als een improvisatie ervaren. In opdracht van mezelf schreef de jonge Nederlandse componiste Renée Vos een werk die het recital verder complimenteert.

Frank Bridge completed his only piano sonata in the year 1924. The work embodies Bridge’s sadness and indignation at the atrocities that took place during the First World War. In addition to very turbulent and virtuoso passages, Bridge occasionally leaves room for hope; it is precisely in these moments that the sonata feels improvisational. Frank Nuyts’ 15th piano sonata, on the other hand, describes what the composer observed and experienced when he looked north in the middle of the central square on the Bijloke site. Despite the carefully noted rhythms, the whole is almost feels as an improvisation. Commissioned by myself, the young Dutch composer Renée Vos wrote a work that further compliments the recital.
