Bolster: Slecht.

I: Oh, oké. Hoe komt het?

B: Ik ben blut.

B: Fuck you.

I: Ach zo.

B: Mmm.

I: Ja, ok. Waarom ben je gestopt?

B: Ik haatte het.

It is an illustrated book following my character Bolster in his struggle to find a job to pay off his debt, and his hope to find happiness, which he thinks will follow. The book consists of three parts: the first part contains his failed search for a job, the second is a visual representation of Bolster’s (dire) mental state, and in the third part Bolster finally finds a job as a factory worker.

My work contains themes of exploitation of the wage laborer, the absurdity of how routinely severe misery is afflicted on them, and how this despair is deemed ordinary.

Interviewer: How are you, Bolster?

Bolster: Bad.

I: Oh, okay. How come?

B: I’m broke.

I: Broke? How come?

B: Didn’t you read the book? I’m in crippling debt and I have no job.

I: I did read your book, but it said that you did have a job?

B: Yes, but I quit.

I: Wasn’t that a foolish move if you’re in debt?

B: Fuck you.

I: Alright.

B: Mmm.

I: So, what are you going to do now?

B: Can you buy me a sandwich or something? I’m hungry.

I: Well no, I still have some more questions.

B: Will you buy me a sandwich after this then?

I: Sure. Why did you quit your job?

B: I hated it.
