“Insert Label” as a pun towards how society “labels”/sees multiracial people and puts us in a box, as a biracial (Filipina-Belgian) woman I embrace this “Third Space” (the identity that lies between being Filipina and Belgian). Playing with cliché’s of the Eurocentric view of what the Filipino/Asian culture is and to visualize some stereotype ideas. ”Exotism” as a main focus and playing with its underlying theme such as “Fetishism” which is a common thing to find in art. A critique given upon indigenous objects which are stripped of their original context and which get the new context of mainly being decorative (such as seen in ‘Exotic Sword’). Using aspects such as fruit to create this “exotic” kind of feeling which is a common subject to find in “Exotism”. Although the context of my work has a tendency to be a taboo and a very heavy subject, I tend to keep the outer appearance light and playful. Using bright and bold colours that refers to the Filipino culture and placing the works in a way to elicite interaction in space.
