In my graduation performance Outline, I collaborate with Sophia Bauer on the Outline trilogy by writer Rachel Cusk. In Outline (2014), Transit (2016) and Kudos (2018), Cusk defiantly describes how people struggle with the tension between civility and chaos as a result of loss, and how people continually reinvent themselves in it. From our rather young point of view in life, I am trying to work with Sophia to translate this merciless literary work to the stage.

the main character in the Outline trilogy is emphatic in her absence. In turn, her myriad interlocutors are extremely present; with a careless compulsion they want to be heard. Divorced men, exhausted feminists, gifted children and their hamsters share life insights with a commitment that is ambiguous. By taking seriously the banality of these bourgeois lives, the horror as well as the pleasure of them is brought into focus.

In other words, she wanted it both ways. There is much to be learned from wanting something both ways.
