De mythologische goden hadden de macht om levenloze materie te bezielen. (…) De smid onder de Olympische goden, Vulcanus, kon zelfs uit metaal een heel leger van mechanische slaven crieëren dat vervolgens door hemzelf tot leven werd gewekt.

Vandaag de dag zijn we net als Vulcanus. In onze laboratoria smeden we machines waarmee we de levensadem niet in het stof van de aarde blazen, maar in staal en silicium. Maar gebeurt dit om de mensheid te bevrijden of juist om haar te ketenen?

Met de installatie Law of the Code stel ik een wereld voor waarin de digitale omgeving volledig is versmolten met de werkelijkheid. In deze wereld is de artificiële intelligentie superieur aan dat van de mens waardoor men de controle over de code is verloren. De mens leeft er slechts volgens de wetten van de technologie – als vee waarvan data wordt geoogst.

Deze installatie bestaat uit sculpturen, geluidsfragmenten en projecties van video en animatie. De lichte spot, de speelse benadering van de digitale omgeving en de fascinatie voor de snelle vooruitgang van de digitale media en technologie zijn elementen die niet alleen hier maar ook in andere van mijn werken aanwezig zijn.

The mythological gods had the power to animate inanimate matter. (…) The blacksmith among the Olympian gods, Vulcanus, could even create from metal a whole army of mechanical slaves which was then brought to life by himself.

Today, we are just like Vulcanus. In our laboratories, we forge machines that blow the breath of life not into the dust of the earth, but into steel and silicon. But is this happening to liberate humanity or rather to chain it?

With the installation Law of the Code, I propose a world in which the digital environment is completely fused with reality. In this world, artificial intelligence is superior to that of humans, which means that people have lost control over the code. Man lives there only according to the laws of technology – like cattle from which data is harvested.

This installation consists of sculptures, sound fragments and projections of video and animation. The light mockery, the playful approach to the digital environment and the fascination with the rapid progress of digital media and technology are elements present not only here but also in other of my works.
