Als bachelorproject hebben we de opdracht gekregen een oud industrieel pakhuis om te vormen tot een theater waar twee gezelschappen verblijven. Hierbij had ik als doel om het statige en elitaire karakter van theater weg te nemen en de speelsheid er terug in te brengen door een onconventionele speelzaal te ontwerpen. Met het concept ‘cultuurhuis van en voor iedereen’ in het achterhoofd legt dit ontwerp een sterke focus op sociale verbondenheid, inclusie en interactie met als doel de beleving van een toneelstuk bij de bezoeker te versterken. De bezoekers zitten tegenover elkaar in een moderne arena. Zo worden ze met de andere voor zich geconfronteerd, in een pleidooi om via deze cultuurvorm een sterkere verbinding met de medemens te creëren. Daar wordt doorheen het hele gebouw op ingespeeld. Het is bovendien ook een verhaal van transparantie; het theater is hier geen verborgen parel binnen het gebouw maar iets dat je overvalt van zodra je binnenstapt. Theater wordt hier het decor van het gebouw zelf en wordt de scène waarin de buurt samenkomt.
For our bachelor project we were asked to transform an old industrial warehouse into a theater where two companies reside. With the intent of removing the stately and elite connotation of theater and bringing in a playful touch, I designed an unconventional stage setting. With the concept of ‘cultural house of and for everyone’ in mind, this design heavily focuses on the concept of (social) inclusion and interaction and aims to elevate the visitors’ experience of a play. Facing each other in a modern arena, they are confronted with the strangers opposite them in a plea to create a stronger connection to others through this artform. By implementing thoughtful design decisions, this objective is carried out throughout the whole building. Transparency is also a key element in this design; here, the theater isn’t a hidden gem, but rather a space that immerses you from the second you step into the building. The theater becomes the decor of the structure and grows into the setting for the gathering of the neighborhood.
